Soccer (also known internationally as football) is a sport played by two opposing teams who attempt to score goals by moving a soccer ball into the opponent's goal with permitted parts of their bodies, generally without handling the ball except for goalkeepers within their own penalty areas. A venue for soccer must include a suitable playing field along with two goals, preferably in the form of nets which meet international regulations for the sport.
The two goals and playing field support association football. Goalkeepers have permitted handling within their own penalty areas, while outfield play generally relies on the feet, head, and other permitted parts of the body.
Indoor soccer uses a walled playing area, while futsal has the separate indoor five-a-side arrangement without sideboards. The outdoor soccer field described here is distinct from those facilities even when several forms of football share a sports complex.
