A large warehouse in a rack-supported building, arranged for very high storage density and usually automated retrieval.

A high-bay warehouse is a very large warehouse facility housed in a rack-supported building. It is designed for the highest possible storage density, usually employing an automated storage retrieval system to achieve this, along with a column-free interior plan enabled by the structural storage racks.

The storage racks also support the building, allowing the storage arrangement and structure to occupy the same system. Separate interior columns do not divide that rack-supported plan.

Automated retrieval is usual but is not the sole defining feature. The rack-supported building form distinguishes this warehouse from a conventional warehouse merely containing tall shelving.
