An outdoor stadium is a structure combining a large stage or playing field with raked seating around it, and which is at least partly open to the sky without a full roof covering.

At least part of the stadium remains open to the sky. A roof over some seating does not make it fully enclosed while the central space or other portions remain open.

An indoor arena has a fixed enclosing roof. A convertible stadium can instead open or fully close its roof.
