architect

The primary designers of a structure, responsible for its original appearance.

The architect of a structure is the firm or practice with a chief role in designing its original shape, look, and plans. In most cases the architect is responsible for the structure's aesthetic appearance and basic functionality, producing a design which includes the detailed layout, overall form, structural and finishing materials, and stylistic details. Often the architect remains on a project through its construction, making any desired adjustments and overseeing completion of the plans.

In some cases multiple architects may be assigned to a structure. When one is responsible for the basic form and aesthetics while another takes responsibility for drafting, detailing, and coordination with engineers, contractors, & building codes, etc., the former is listed as the design architect and the latter as the associate architect. An equal collaboration between different architects is also possible.

The role concerns chief responsibility for the original design. Equal collaborations can share it, while a division between concept design and technical realization is expressed through the design-architect and associate-architect roles.
