sewage storage

Facilities that hold sewage, including septic tanks and storage before treatment.

Sewage storage sites are places for holding, collecting, or general storage of water, human waste, and other materials from sewage systems or outhouses. These include septic tanks as well as larger scale infrastructure for holding sewage before treatment.

The material held is sewage or waste from sanitary systems. Drainage storage holds drainage or irrigation overflow, while garbage storage holds general discarded waste. A tank containing both sewage and stormwater still holds sewage.

Storage and treatment can occur in the same installation. A septic tank retains wastewater and separates settled or floating matter as part of treatment. A holding tank retains sewage for removal. The storage function does not require a particular tank size or number of chambers.
