elevation

A scaled technical diagram showing an object's vertical outline, profile, or cross-section, often with height marks.

An elevation is a technical or informative diagram showing the vertical outline, profile, or cross-section of an object. Elevations must be drawn to scale, and often include scaling marks to indicate heights (of floors, etc.) above a defined datum.

Artistic representations that show the surface of an object in any level of detail in order to represent it visually are considered renderings or drawings rather than elevations, even if they show an object straight-on, unless they are accompanied by technical data typical of an elevation.

Scale and technical information distinguish the elevation from an artistic likeness. A straight-on view alone is insufficient: a drawing or rendering remains in that image category unless it carries the technical information required here. Vertical sections are included in this definition.
