waterfront development

A planned cluster at the water's edge whose shoreline relationship defines the development and shapes its layout.

A waterfront development occupies land at the water's edge, in many cases a former port, dockyard, warehouse quay or industrial shoreline cleared for new use. The water frontage defines the site and usually shapes the layout, with promenades and public space along the edge.

The uses inside vary, so a waterfront development may hold housing, offices, culture or all of them. Choose this form over the more general ones when the relation to the water is the reason the development exists.

Where the site lies inland, use the masterplanned community or the mixed-use development.
