A venue for athletic games which involves direct competition between individual players.
A venue for individual contests is a place designated for athletic games in which individuals compete against each other directly according to exact rules. These can also include venues for paired competition or where the sports are slightly flexible in the numbers of persons involved, such as tennis.
The players oppose each other directly in an athletic game. Paired play is also possible, so an individual contest need not involve exactly two people.
A demonstration of speed or strength without a game belongs to athletics. Team sports have opposing teams as the competing sides; paired play in a sport such as tennis remains an individual contest.
