Definitions

neo-classical

A conservative application of classical Greek and Roman design features, including columns, arches, and pediments.

Neo-Classicism is a revival of ancient Greek and Roman styles. It began in the mid-18th century, following the more extravagant baroque style which also used a classical vocabulary. In contrast to baroque, neo-classicism aims to recapture an idealized purity of authentic classical forms.

The style is generally rational and conservative, using symmetrical plans and a regular vocabulary of columns, colonnades, arches, and pediments. Designs normally follow the pattern of the classical column, with a pronounced base, a uniform shaft with little decoration, and a clearly defined top. Facades are almost always brick or stone.
