mooring

A support arrangement tying a water-supported floating structure to a fixed point, temporarily or permanently.

A mooring system is an alternative to a normal foundation system used for floating structures which are permanently or temporarily tethered to a fixed point. The structure itself is supported by water, and is tied or bound to a fixed point usually at one or more sides of the structure.

This applies to floating buildings as well as bridges, such as float bridges.

Water continues to carry the structure while the tether restrains its position. Mooring is included for floating bridges as well as floating buildings.
