number of boat slips

The total number of wet docking places available for individual boats within or belonging to a structure, module, or site.

The number of boat slips in a structure, module, or site is the total number of docking places within or belonging to that object which are available for individual boats of any kind. If the slips are delineated clearly, then the number is exact; if not, and the number depends on the sizes of boats that happen to dock there at one time, then the number should be an approximation based on the usual sizes of boats using the facility. Dry docks are not counted as boat slips.

The quantity describes docking capacity for boats in the water. A dry dock serves a different purpose and does not add to the number of slips.

Clearly divided slips give fixed individual positions. An undivided docking area instead has a capacity that depends on boat size, so the usual boats using it determine the approximate figure.
