An outdoor theater is an open-air venue for musical or dramatic performances. Amphitheaters and bandshells both belong to this category, as well as other permanent outdoor stages with an accompanying viewing area. Component elements may include seating, a stage platform, a proscenium, stage props, subsidiary backrooms, or a sheltering roof.

The stage and viewing area form a venue for music or drama. Amphitheaters and bandshells are included forms.

A sheltering roof or backstage rooms can be part of the venue without enclosing the whole audience space. The definition does not require every listed stage or seating component.
