Ceramic tiles are usually small, flat, clay-based pieces which are applied with mortar or other adhesive to a backing surface. Most ceramic tile facades are colored and glazed, and in many cases the tiles are arranged in visually interesting patterns. Tile color, shape, and arrangement allow varied facade designs.

The ceramic pieces are attached to a backing surface. Their clay-based composition distinguishes them from glass, stone, or plastic facade pieces of similar size.

Glazing and color are common treatments rather than requirements. A decorative pattern can be made from the tiles, but an unpatterned arrangement remains a ceramic-tile facade.
