total facade area

The total area of all parts of a structure's facade, not counting minor indentations.

The total facade area of a structure is the cumulative area of all planes belonging to any section of its facade. This includes flat and curved facade sections, but it treats each plane as a basic geometric shape, not counting indentations or currugations within the plane.

The value of this field for any given built object plays a role in determining its facade material, facade system, and facade color, as each of these must apply to at least 10% of the total facade area to be assigned.

An area is only comparable alongside the standard it was measured to. National measuring codes differ over balconies, atrium voids and shafts, so two published figures for one building can both be correct.

A figure that covers a complex rather than a single building is a different measurement again. Where a tower shares a podium, the record has to say whether the podium is inside the figure.
