The number of hotel units in any built object or defined area is the total number of temporary lodging units there, including suites, non-suite hotel rooms, extended stay hotel rooms, hotel-condominium units, and any other type of discrete units for lodging. It does not include shared areas such as bunk rooms in a hostel.

The count follows discrete lodging units across the listed accommodation types. The number of beds or people that can sleep in them is a different capacity measure.

Several beds in a shared hostel bunk room do not become hotel units in this count. The exclusion of shared lodging areas remains applicable even when a property also contains private hotel rooms.
