A place on a highway or other traffic route where tolls are collected from travelers.
A toll booth is a structure or other point on any kind of traffic route where a fee for using the route is exacted, either through automatic computerized means, through automated pay machines, or through cash transactions with an employee.
The payment is for use of the traffic route. The definition extends beyond highways to other kinds of route where such a fee is collected.
Collection can be computerized, use a payment machine, or involve an employee. A continuously staffed booth is therefore not required.
