A prohibition on alcoholic beverages indicates that potable beverages containing measurable amounts of alcohol may not be consumed within a particular structure, property, or area. This prohibition is normally accompanied by a prohibition on carrying open (or sometimes closed) alcoholic beverages. The purpose of the policy is usually to maintain decorum and civil behavior within an area.
The defining restriction is on consuming beverages containing alcohol. A separate restriction on carrying open or closed containers commonly accompanies it but is not the same activity.
