Shifting or settling ground under a structure damages it partly or completely.
A structure is damaged by soil movements when settling or shifting earth or rock in its vicinity cause irregular movements or stresses on the structure and cause notable damage to it. This does not pertain to soil movements in the case of earthquakes, nor to impacts from sliding or falling earth or rocks behind or from the side of the structure.
The damage results from ground movement imposing irregular displacement or stress on the structure. Landslide damage concerns loose earth or rock striking it from elsewhere.
Earthquake damage is recorded separately. Damage caused by construction errors at a neighboring site also has the specific damaged by another structure definition.
