The number of paternosters in a structure is the number of continuously moving loops installed, at least partly within the perimeter of the structure, which carry persons or goods up and down on platforms or in cabins. Normally each loop features several platforms or cabins, usually numbered approximately double the floors served by the paternoster.

The unit counted is the complete moving loop. Its several cabins or platforms do not each count as a separate paternoster.

A loop qualifies when at least part of it lies within the structure's perimeter. The approximate relationship between cabin count and floors served describes a usual arrangement rather than a required ratio.
