metal shingles

A roof covering of small, overlapping rolled-metal plates arranged in successive courses.

Metal shingle roofing is made from several small, overlapping plates of any kind of rolled metal. It differs from the various kinds of metal sheet roofing in that the pieces are much smaller (a few centimeters each side), and overlap each other from top to bottom in an alternating pattern. Because of the layout of shingles, they are most generally used on sloping roofs.

The individual plates overlap down the slope, and the joints are staggered between courses. The metal can vary while the small-unit shingle arrangement remains the same.

Steel sheeting and other sheet-metal coverings use large panels or slats. Small metal shingles remain shingles even when their metal matches that of a sheet-roofing category.
