synthetic membrane

A roof covering formed from sheets of plastic, rubber, or similar synthetic material joined into a watertight layer.

A synthetic membrane roof is a layer of plastic, rubber, or a similar material covering the roof, usually in a single watertight sheet. It is an inexpensive material, and is useful for preventing rain or snow penetration of flat roofs. It is normally constructed by welding or taping several sheets together to fit the roof.

The covering forms a continuous membrane over the roof surface. Several pieces can be joined into that layer, so a single watertight covering need not be manufactured as one roof-sized sheet.

Asphalt sheeting is identified by its asphalt or tar coating. Suspended fabric forms a roof through a different construction arrangement from a membrane covering the roof surface.
