flat roof

A roof with no slope greater than 10 degrees or major projecting features, allowing small parapets, vents, skylights, and chimneys.

A flat roof is a roof without any slope greater than 10 degrees, and without any ornamentation, mechanical penthouses, or other architectural features rising above it. A small cornice or parapet around the edge, small vents or skylights, or chimneys do not interfere with a roof's qualification as flat.

If a building has a mechanical floor at the top, which is set back from the perimeter of the floors below, and the roof below that is flat, then it is classified as a flat roof with box(es).

A gabled, hipped, pyramidal, or sloping roof with an extremely shallow slope (10 degrees or less) is considered a flat roof.
