container rail terminal
A facility for loading and unloading large containers carried on railroad networks.
A container rail terminal is a loading, unloading, and transfer point for freight carried in large containers via railroad. The shipping containers may be stacked one or two containers high. The facility must generally have cranes for lifting and moving the containers.
The containers are transferred as freight units between trains and connecting transport or handling areas. The terminal is distinct from a passenger boarding station.
Loading arrangements depend on the railcars and containers handled. Cranes move the containers at the transfer point; the terminal can handle containers carried in single or double stacks.
