asphalt

A hardened mixture of crushed rock aggregate and viscous petroleum derivatives used in flooring or paving.

Asphalt (as a flooring or paving material) is a hardened black or dark gray substance formed by mixing crushed rock aggregate with petroleum-derived liquid or viscous asphalt. It is normally placed at the site; hot mixtures harden as they cool after placement and compaction. It is also available in the form of prefabricated paving blocks.

The mixture supplies the flooring or paving surface. The asphalt binder holds the mineral aggregate together, rather than the surface consisting of loose crushed stone.

Prefabricated asphalt blocks are included alongside material placed at the site. This floor-covering entry is separate from the asphalt facade material designation.
