external loudspeaker

An apparatus on a structure or object which amplifies and projects sounds into the surrounding area.

An external loudspeaker is an appliance or other apparatus on a structure or object which amplifies sounds (either recorded or live) and projects them into the surrounding area. These can be used for announcements, music, calls to prayer, or safety warnings. They may be located on the facade or within a structure, as long as they are positioned for broadcasting into the area beyond the structure's limits.

A loudspeaker differs from a siren, which normally cannot broadcast spoken or recorded messages but rather emits a simple warning tone.

The direction of sound projection supplies the external character: a device positioned inside can qualify when it broadcasts beyond the structure. A loudspeaker used only for an enclosed interior lacks that outward broadcasting function.
