mountain indigenous district

A mountain indigenous district is a self-governing district in a Taiwanese special municipality that was converted from a mountain indigenous township.
It has a district council and district office and exercises local self-government comparable to a township. This status preserves local autonomy within the special municipality.
An ordinary district of a special municipality is an administrative branch whose head is appointed by the mayor. The elected self-government of the indigenous district is the legal distinction.
